How much does a luxury private trip to Egypt cost?
As of 2026, a fully private trip to Egypt with a dedicated licensed Egyptologist, five-star hotels and a dahabiya sailing typically costs USD 600–1,500 per person per day, so roughly USD 5,000–15,000 per person for eight to twelve days, excluding international flights. Guide, boat, private access and hotel tier drive most of the difference.
Why ranges, not a number
Egypt prices in two currencies at once. Hotels, boats and guides are quoted in US dollars or euros; entrance tickets are set in Egyptian pounds and have risen sharply several times since 2023. Two identical-looking itineraries can differ by a factor of two depending on the boat, the hotel floor and whether the guide is yours alone. So we give ranges and explain what moves them.
Typical all-in ranges, per person, 2026
For two people travelling together, land arrangements only, excluding international flights, tips and personal shopping:
| Trip | Typical range per person |
|---|---|
| 8 days, private guide, five-star hotels, cruise ship | USD 5,000–8,000 |
| 8–10 days, private guide, five-star hotels, shared dahabiya | USD 7,000–11,000 |
| 10–12 days, private guide, top-tier hotels, dahabiya, private access where available | USD 10,000–15,000 |
| 12+ days with a full dahabiya charter for a group | Depends on group size; per-person cost falls as the group grows |
Solo travellers pay more per person because the guide, driver and car are not shared. Groups of four to eight pay noticeably less per person for the same quality.
The four things that drive the price
1. The guide. A licensed Egyptologist who stays with you for the whole trip, flies with you, and sails on your boat is the largest single service cost after the boat. Day-hire guides in each city are cheaper and are how most tours work. The whole-trip guide is what makes the days coherent and is the thing our travellers most often say was worth it.
2. The boat. A standard cruise ship cabin for three nights is the cheapest way down the river. A cabin on a good dahabiya for four or five nights typically costs two to three times as much. A full charter is a different order again, but divided among eight to twelve people it can be close to a shared dahabiya per head.
3. Hotels. Cairo and Luxor have a wide band of five-star hotels. The difference between a good five-star and the historic or palace-category properties with pyramid or Nile views can be USD 300–800 a night per room. This is the easiest lever to adjust without touching the experience of the sites.
4. Private access and extras. Entering the Giza Plateau before public opening, a Grand Egyptian Museum visit after closing, a tomb opened for your party alone, or a private tented dinner below the pyramids are arranged through licensed partners with the antiquities authorities, where available. Each carries a separate fee set by the authority and the partner, and the fees change. They add meaningfully to the total; they also change the trip entirely.
What is usually included, and what is not
Typically included in a private trip: all domestic flights, private car and driver, your Egyptologist, hotels with breakfast, the boat with full board, entrance tickets to the standard sites, and a 24/7 point of contact.
Typically excluded: international flights, visa (USD 30 on arrival or single-entry e-visa, USD 65 multiple-entry, as of 2026; a further small rise is expected in January 2027; check the official portal), travel insurance, lunches and dinners in cities, tips, the Great Pyramid interior and the special tombs unless listed, drinks on the boat, and personal spending.
Ask any operator for the second list, not the first. The second list is where surprises live.
Entrance tickets: the moving part
Ticket prices for foreigners are set in Egyptian pounds and revised often. As of 2026, the general Giza Plateau ticket is in the hundreds of pounds, the Great Pyramid interior in the low thousands, the Valley of the Kings general ticket in the hundreds, and the tomb of Seti I alone around the price of a good dinner for two. Over a ten-day trip, tickets for one person typically total the equivalent of several hundred US dollars. Check current rules; a reputable operator will quote tickets at the published rate with no mark-up.
Tipping
Tipping is part of working life in Egypt. A reasonable planning figure for a private trip is USD 15–30 per person per day across guide, driver, boat crew and hotel staff, given at the end of each segment. Some operators fold this into the price; ours is quoted separately so you can see it.
Where not to save
Hotel floor, yes. Boat category, sometimes. The guide, no. A licensed Egyptologist for the whole trip is what turns a sequence of sites into a story. It is also the thing that keeps the hassle away, as explained on our safety page. If the budget has to give somewhere, give on the hotel in Aswan, where you will be on deck anyway.

FAQ
How much does a dahabiya cruise cost? As of 2026, a cabin on a good dahabiya for four to five nights typically costs two to three times a standard cruise-ship cabin for three nights. A full charter divides among 8–24 guests. Ask for the specific boat's rate.
Is Egypt expensive for tourists? Day-to-day Egypt is inexpensive: meals, transport and crafts cost a fraction of US or UK prices. The premium items are the guide, the boat, top hotels and private access. The total is what you choose.
What does a private Egyptologist guide cost per day? Published guides suggest budgeting roughly USD 100 per person per day for a private guide as of late 2025, less per head for larger parties. A whole-trip Egyptologist also adds their flights, boat cabin and hotel nights. Ask for the figure itemised.
